Day Two Cabin Cruiser Ocean Trip
My boat is a 28-foot long cabin cruiser with a single gas engine. See: http://dallas93444.hubpages.com/hub/Life-is-Like-My-Cabin-Cruiser It turned into a four day trip averaging 10 miles per hour for 300 miles to the Tower Marina, Lodi, California (South of Sacramento).
The Second Day
After refueling, and a walk along the tourist parts of Morro Bay, mom wanted to do some Karaoke singing! She sang as if her life depended on it! We had a great time. We left at 6:30 the next morning for Monterey Bay, 110 miles to the North.
When motoring North, the swells travel South. The waves constantly pound into the boat, spraying seawater over the boat. It uses lots of gas and makes the engine work much harder. At times, the boat came completely out of the water. Again, we got seasick. When I had to go below to switch gas tanks, the smell of the gas would make me run for the side of the boat. Mom did not move, She had her head between her knees with a garbage bag held next to her mouth.
I am being thrown around like a monkey on a football. I slow the boat to 10 miles per hour. We endure for 12 hours. We pull into Monterey Bay at dusk. No one answers my radio calls. With two gallons of gas remaining of the 150 gallons I had, I head to the nearest dock. It is the gas dock. It opens at 8 in the morning. The sea lions are making a tremendous noise barking… They barked all night. While my mother was trying to sleep, she told me she thought the boat was breaking up when we first started at Port San Luis!
I was shocked. She did not panic. She eventually determined the crashing and banging she had heard was things crashing from cupboards and drawers. What a tough, calm mother! She had ultimate confidence I knew what I was doing and would make sure everything would be OK. The boat performed fantastic! My four months of repairs and preparation was paying off.
